    The APWU today denounced plans by the Postal Service to resume the closure and consolidation of up to 82 mail processing plants beginning in January 2015.

    “This is a direct assault on service to the people of the country, on postal workers and on the Postal Service’s own network,” said union President Mark Dimondstein. The closure of the plants will require the USPS to degrade service standards and delay mail.

    “We need a Postmaster General who will champion the Postal Service. Instead, PMG Donahoe is on a rampage to destroy it,” he said

    The ‘Don’t Buy Staples’ movement got a big boost this month when the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) voted to endorse the boycott. In a letter to Staples CEO Ronald L. Sargent and Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry wrote, “On behalf of the Service Employees International’s 2 million members, I am writing to express SEIU’s strong opposition to the United States Postal Service’s decision to operate postal counters in Staples stores, and to inform you that SEIU is boycotting all Staples stores... This misguided program jeopardizes the integrity and quality of United States mail service and undercuts skilled middle class jobs by shifting them to part-time, low-wage, non-union hourly employees."

    Several other labor organizations have also joined the 'Don't Buy Staples' movement.

    Chris Smith
    By Chris Smith,

    Late last week, President Obama announced his intent to nominate Carolyn W. Colvin to lead the Social Security Administration (SSA). A longtime government administrator, Ms. Colvin has been the agency’s acting commissioner since February 2013. There will be a confirmation hearing in the Senate Finance Committee and, if confirmed, she would serve a six-year term. The appointment comes at a time when the SSA faces a number of ongoing challenges. Budget cuts at the agency have recently led to field office closures, staff reductions, and service cuts. The budget stress at the agency has been coupled with increased demand for support services as more and more baby boomers hit retirement age.

    PMG’s Demands: Bad for Postal Workers

    Chris Smith
    By Chris Smith,

    The Postmaster General and the USPS are lobbying Congress. What are they asking legislators to do?

    • Reduce letter delivery to five days per week;
    • Deny new hires a “defined benefit” retirement (pension) plan;
    • Force injured workers into a poverty retirement.

    If these points look familiar, they should! They are all part of the severely flawed Senate bill (S. 1486) sponsored by Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK).
