    AFT Delegates Adopt 'Don't Buy Staples' Resolution, Rally in Support of U.S. Postal Workers

    American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and thousands of AFT convention delegates joined members of the American Postal Workers Union and other community members in a rally July 12, telling the United States Postal Service and the Staples corporation that the “U.S. Mail Is Not for Sale.” They demanded an end to the United States Postal Service’s plan to let Staples employees operate postal counters inside Staples stores, ultimately putting thousands of Postal Service jobs in jeopardy. The AFT has also passed a resolution in support of APWU’s boycott against Staples Inc. It resolves “that members of the AFT, along with friends, colleagues and family members, are urged to no longer shop at Staples stores until further notice.”

    Thousands of Teachers, Postal Workers and Public Employees to Protest Post Office Outsourcing to Staples Stores Today

    Thousands of delegates to the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Convention meeting in Los Angeles this week will vote to boycott the bulk goods retailer Staples today. Outside the Los Angeles Convention Center, at 6 pm, they will join postal workers and other supporters in protesting the outsourcing of U.S. Post Office jobs and services.

    Excitement Builds as National Convention Nears

    As the start of the APWU 22nd Biennial Convention nears, anticipation for the big event is building. As of the second week in July, more than 2,000 delegates representing more than 300 locals and state organizations had registered. This year’s theme, Standing Up – Fighting Back! reflects the union’s new activism and the convention will as well. In addition to the traditional convention events, featured guest speakers scheduled to address delegates include Danny Glover, Ed Schultz, Rev. William Barber, Jim Hightower and Richard Trumka.

    On June 30, the Postal Service announced plans to resume the closure and consolidation of up to 82 mail processing plants beginning in January 2015.  The APWU was quick to denounce USPS’s destructive scheme.  “This is a direct assault on service to the people of the country, on postal workers and on the Postal Service’s own network,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.
